Crystal Cave by firedudewraith Crystal Cave by firedudewraith
Here is a piece that shows flowery crystals that grow. I did this recently for a background of a website. I'll add more details and link when the site is ready.

This is such an amazing piece! We are currently setting up a Minecraft server and we will certainly use this piece for inspiration! I have made a blog post on our forums featuring all our favorite pieces of artwork, of course we will give proper credit to you as artist and put down a direct link to this deviant!

So this is where the Dark Crystal came from.

Hmmm.

Not sure what to say about this piece...Gimme a sec...Waait for it...Ah! There we go!

It's a captivating piece, which drew me in with the rathers large crystal at its center. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but I believe it acts as the centerpiece of the work to great effect. When you first look at it, you take in the crystal and then the odd, swirling ether around it. Me and a friend argued that it could possibly be spirits swirling around it or some effect of the crystal itself?

Next, moving to the casing on its lower half and the chains made me wonder if it's chained there purposely to prevent it from floating off or for some other reason? The chains, in my opinion, give the feeling that the crystal is trapped more as a prisoner of some sort rather than as a device. Also, I get that basic feeling due to the hostile environment that the crystal is trapped in, though by the number of shards potruding all around, I'd take it that either the area is trying to absorb the crystal into itself slowly or the cystal's properties are affecting the area.

All in all, I like the use of colors and shading, which make the crystal stand out in stark contrast to its gloomy environment.

Hey, thanks for your constructive comment. I appreciate your time in breaking them down.

Well, I'd imagine that the big crystal contains potent arcana power, hence the swirling effect around it. The whole lava environment hints at the chaotic and dangerous outburst a mishap would happen if someone handles its magic in the wrong way. The chain, while looking-barely sufficient to contain and hold the crystal in place suggests that again, it's a dangerous but powerful place to be in.

That's my interpretation. ;)

My pleasure, I really must say bravo on this piece, and no problem with breaking it down. I'm not an artist but I've taken enough classes to give a comment or two.

~Tries desperately to make a stick figure look real~ :(

Actually, the potent arcana does seem more apt, and was my original thought on the crystal. However, my mind wanders. Lol.
Well, magic is and always has been an unstable element in fantasy settings, and I can definitely imagine how that could happen. Novice mage tries to abuse crystal; botches spell and ruins nice looking cave; order of magi comes and chains crystal with inscribed warding chains. Heheh.

^_^ Overall, I like your interpretation as well :D
